Book Description:
The philosophy and strategies of the samurai explained Samurai Wisdom presents new translations of five classic works on Bushido, the way of the samurai warrior. These works, all authored by the scholar Yamaga Soko and his disciples, provided the core ideals and philosophy underlying samurai conduct and way of life. Together they offer an in-depth, practical guide to building character and living a proper life according to the precepts of Bushido. Yamaga's writings inspired the transformation of the samurai from a feudal warrior class to a group with great intellectual, political, and ethical leadership and influence. The classic works translated in Samurai Wisdom, despite being nearly 400 years old, are as timeless and applicable today as Sun Tzu s famous work, The Art of War. Somewhat similar to "Code of the Samurai," but much longer, more detailed, and the product of a different school of samurai thought. Yamaga Soko (1622-1685) was a renowned scholar, martial artist, and military strategist from the chivalrous school that produced many of the greatest warrior's in Japanes history, including Takeda Shingen, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Miyamoto Musashi. Yamaga was a critical thinker who rejected official orthodoxy and paid the price in censorship and banishment. His works were preserved by his heirs and disciples, eventually to re-emerge as acknowledged monuments of Bushido.
